From ancient times to the present, horses in human narratives have been crowned with meanings of reliability and endurance, named “the foremost of the six domesticated animals.” Their value has been written and rewritten through agriculture, warfare, and transportation, gradually turning the horse into a symbol of order, wealth, and state power. A “good horse” is one that is tamed, managed, disciplined, and efficiently used. And yet, as this praise for obedience accumulates, the horse’s instinct as a living being—its longing for freedom and autonomy—is pressed beneath the saddle, quietly erased.

In the fate of the horse, we recognize a familiar experience of life. We, too, are placed within patriarchal structures, pre-scripted into cis-heteronormative norms and social expectations of obedience and functionality. The parts of us that do not conform are suppressed; the parts that comply are permitted and absorbed. We learn how to “work like oxen and horses,” and in doing so, we are gradually trained to forget that we might have been able to run elsewhere.

Yet the mythical 4th century book, Classic of Mountains and Seas offers us another imagination through the figure of the Tianma (Heavenly Horse):

“There is a beast whose form resembles a white dog with a black head. When it sees humans, it flies. Its name is Tianma.”

It resembles a white dog, yet exists on its own terms—its body does not have to serve its name, nor does its form need to justify itself to expectation. As a horse that can fly, the Tianma breaks free from reins and ground-bound order, moving along and beyond the edges of the dominant mainstream, as if declaring: I have the right to decide what I am.

In the new year, as the saddle breaks. The body and its autonomy return to their rightful owner. What lies ahead is no longer a predetermined route, but an open wilderness. We meet here not to fall into line, but to travel alongside one another as a herd. Whether or not you are a Chinese queer person, as long as you celebrate Lunar New Year and are seeking your own allies and directions, we invite you to participate, co-create, and be present with us.

In the Year of the Horse, we reclaim the meaning of “letting the Heavenly Horse roam free”（天马行空）—to keep moving through the cracks of reality, to set off in all directions. We meet in motion, we walk together by choice, and we let each other’s presence become the force that carries us forward.
