ADULT VIDEOFLUOROSCOPIC SWALLOWING STUDY WORKSHOP

This workshop will examine the use of Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS) in the assessment and management of adult dysphagia.  The workshop is targeted at clinicians with beginner to intermediate knowledge and experience in VFSS. Day One will revise the variations of healthy swallowing function, cover VFSS preparation, procedures and interpretation of disordered swallowing and finishes with the utilisation of compensatory strategies during the study. Day Two will build on the knowledge from Day One to include real-time interpretation and practice in interpreting and report writing across several case presentations. Participants will be involved in small and whole group practical sessions throughout both days.

Learning Objectives

    At the completion of the workshop, participants will have an understanding of:

• the benefits and limitations of VFSS

• the equipment and preparation required to undertake a VFSS

• the planes of view used during VFSS and how to achieve optimal imaging

• considerations within the VFSS protocol such as pulse rate and bolus variables

• the anatomy, physiology and variations of a healthy swallow

• the features of disordered swallowing physiology in relation to VFSS assessment and interpretation

• the rationale and technique for oesophageal screening

• the selection of compensatory strategies in VFSS and evaluation of effectiveness

• the roles of the radiologist and radiographer in VFSS clinic.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY MANAGEMENT OF THE ADULT PATIENT WITH A TRACHEOSTOMY WORKSHOP

This workshop will examine the role of the speech pathologist in the management of the adult patient with a tracheostomy as is managed in Queensland Health. It aims to provide evidence-based background on swallowing management, cuff deflation, decannulation practices, and communication. Controversial issues such as the use of blue dye and cuff status for swallowing management will also be discussed. Participants will be involved in small-group practical sessions where they will have an opportunity to discuss through case scenarios and problem-solving formats.  This workshop will not cover the management of the ventilated patient.

Learning Objectives

    At the completion of the workshop, participants will have:

• an understanding of the types, indicators, features and function of tracheostomy tubes

• an understanding of the impact of the tracheostomy tube and cuff on swallowing and communication

• an understanding of the role of the speech pathologist in tracheostomy management in Queensland Health, including swallowing assessment, cuff deflation, and decannulation

• an understanding of the communication options for the patient with a tracheostomy including speaking valves and above-cuff voicing

• the opportunity to participate in case scenario/problem solving in group format

• an update of current evidence in the area of tracheostomy management relevant to speech pathology.

Please note: Both workshops are intended for practising speech pathologists who have early to intermediate career experience. The content and design of these workshops is not suitable for student speech pathologists.
