24 years of Repressed Records: Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Dumbells, Chateau & Knock Knock
Description
Celebrate 24 years of Repressed Records with Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Dumbells, Chateau & Knock Knock on Saturday July 5 at The Marrickville Bowling & Recreation Club! Here’s some info on the music…
Knock Knock. I bet you’re wondering if their name is a reference to a track from Dizzee Rascal’s sophomore effort ‘Showtime’, or (more likely) a Smog album. Seeing one of their gigs earlier this year I was quite blown away by the duo's (both formerly of Giant Hammer) bold but intimate set of guitar, organ, rhythm box and striking dual vocal songs.
Joining us from Victoria is Chateau, a couple of Al’s doing big things: Al Montfort (Sleeper & Snake, Dick Diver, Total Control etc) and Alex Macfarlane (Hobbies Galore, Faceless Burial, Green Child etc). We initially proposed to Alex Mc that he perform solo, and he counteroffered bringing Al Mont with him. And if you’ve ever been in the same space as Al Mont, you’d know you want him at your party!
Dumbells, everyone loves them. They are a rock ‘n’ roll joy. To quote from their official album press release, “Dumbells do stuff with their guitars, bass, drums and voices that we all know feel good, natural and exciting, but maybe in a world rife with self consciousness and cynicism, often get lost in the sauce." Their new songs in recent sets have been divine.
And of course, Eddy Current Suppression Ring. What a pleasure it is to give the public another shot at experiencing one of the few popular phenomenons of 21st century Australian music that isn’t a bit crap. In fact they are actually really great! My love for their music, much like the rainbow lorikeet population in the Perth metro area, has grown substantially since first stocking ‘Primary Colours’ towards the end of our Penrith era. Beyond sounding choice, they’re a band that means a lot to the store as key players in the reinvigoration of the independent music spirit. Here’s to an even longer and more meaningful existence in music!
