HISTORY:

The gallery officially opened on 15 November 2001, prior to the QCAD campus opening to students for the first time. Our first exhibition ‘Place/Displace’, was a celebration of Griffith University success featuring the works of 8 post-graduate students; Vernon Ah Kee, Katie Barnes, Venus Ganis, Jo Grant, Donna Marcus, Brad Nunn, Paula Payne and Janice Peacock. It was curated by Sophie McIntyre and was open from 16 November 2001 – 16 January 2002.

Prior to 2001 Griffith University Art Museum had gallery spaces on the Nathan Campus but this moment celebrated the Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) finding it’s new home at South Bank and officially joining Griffith University it also marked Griffith University’s long-term commitment to teaching and supporting the arts.

In November 2001, the then Director of QCAD, Mostyn Bramley-Moore said:
‘College galleries can function in an interesting place between the public museum and the commercial gallery or access space. They are institutional (resourced, respectable) and yet the audience expects them to be challenging, to be varied in what they do, to walk close to the edge. Queensland College of Art is proud of its new gallery on its new site. It is our intention to make this venue an important one on the Australian cultural landscape.’

The rest of the QCAD Campus opened in early 2002 to eager students and staff, ready to make use of the 14,500sqm of state-of-the-art teaching and research space, specialist workshops, the art gallery and the University’s in-house design studio.
