27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Event description
On March 31, 1968,Dr. King delivered what was to be his final sermon at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Speaking about what he viewed as the three evils of racism, poverty and militarism, Dr. King commented that "one of the great liabilities of life is that all too many people find themselves living amid a great period of social change and yet they fail to develop the new attitudes, the new mental responses that the new situation demands."
He issued this challenge:
"Let us stand up.
Let us be a concerned generation.
Let us remain awake through a great revolution."
On January 15, 2024, we honor Dr. King's words at our 27th annual event, centering on the theme Remain Awake. This year’s in person program, co-sponsored by PADC and the City of Piedmont, will feature speakers including Corrina Gould of the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, Mayor of Piedmont Jen Cavenaugh, and keynote speaker Dr. Amber Johnson, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff in the Division for Equity & Inclusion at UC Berkeley. The event will also feature OIGC’s Oakland Youth Chorus and the third annual Art & Essay Showcase.
