Animation

Tamworth Art Academy is pleased to present an 3-day animation masterclass for all students over 10 years old, with local educator, illustrator and animator, Danny Stanley. Budding animators of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, will enjoy working through the twelve principles of animation, with time-honoured exercises such as the bouncing ball; the falling brick; and with students' own imaginative creations. These twelve principles were developed by Disney in the 1930's, as the medium was being born, and they have given students and practitioners of animation a solid basis to learn their craft in the years since. Because they relate to motion in the real world, these principles are equally applicable across all different forms and styles of animation, from hand-drawn 2D, to 3D, stop motion etc. Danny will guide students through exercises which teach students these skills. As shown in the promotional video, Danny's main training is in hand-drawn 2D animation, but other forms of animation will be just as welcome.

Who is this for?

Animation is a technique and process open to anybody with a willingness to learn. Students with some previous drawing and/or animation experience will have some advantage, but total beginners are welcome. The class is for anybody over 10, so there will be a mix of ages. We at Tamworth Art Academy find a healthy mixing of ages to be beneficial to the class atmosphere, and to learning objectives for students. The nature of the exercises means that both beginner and advanced students can work at a similar pace.

Technology/Mediums

Tablet/Laptop: The ideal way for students to complete the course will be with a device which can be drawn on directly, such as a tablet. A laptop would work as well - if students with a laptop wish to draw, they can use any USB drawing tablet; otherwise, they can use the mouse. Cheap and free software to use on these devices is readily available, with recommendations to be sent out before class, once we are aware of what people intend to be using to complete the course.

Paper: For students without access to a device, we also have the option of completing the course in traditional paper animation, using flip books and light-boxes, which are supplied. Ideally, these students will have a phone or small tablet with which to take photos of pages and compilate into video, but different circumstances can be catered to.

Stop-motion: If students have a particular wish to complete the course in claymation, stop-motion or anything else, they are more than welcome to, but they will have to bring their own supplies.

3D/CGI: Students who have some experience in 3D animation software will be able to complete the course that way if they wish, though even students wishing to move into 3D animation would ideally learn the basics with the fundamental skill of drawing, first.

If you have any questions at all about devices, software or animation mediums, please don't hesitate to send Danny an email at daniel.b.stanley@gmail.com, or call him at 0434670478, and he will be more than happy to guide you in the right direction.
