33rd Parallel South: An Oral History of Latin American solidarity in Sydney. Talk by Pablo Leighton

In conjunction with the Liverpool Regional Museum’s current exhibition Exilio (Exiled) Chile to South-West Sydney, Pablo Leighton will give a talk titled 33rd Parallel South: An Oral History of Latin American Solidarity in Sydney.

This talk will feature a collection of recent interviews with Latin American refugees and Australian solidarity activists. The project aimed to preserve through an oral history the memories of Latin American diaspora living in Sydney since the first significant waves of migration began 50 years ago. The initiative also features personal accounts of local activists which helped Latin America to enter the cultural and political history of Australia, particularly between the 1970s and 1990s.

Pablo Leighton worked in Chile, the United States and Spain as a filmmaker and writer of fiction and non-fiction productions. Since moving to Australia in 2008, he has worked as educator and researcher on Latin American audio-visual culture. He co-founded the Latin American Research Platform (www.latitudes33.au), which has organised conferences, seminars, community events, online papers and digital research projects. He holds a PhD in Latin American Studies from the University of Santiago, Chile and a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies from Macquarie University.
