4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane

4.48 Psychosis is Sarah Kane’s final and most intimate work. Eschewing traditional plot and character, the play unfolds as a raw, poetic exploration of depression, psychosis, and moments of piercing clarity. Named for the hour Kane described as one of painful lucidity, the text invites audiences into the interior landscape of a mind wrestling with despair, language, and the desire to be understood.

Sarah Kane was one of the most influential and controversial voices in contemporary British theatre. Known for her uncompromising honesty and formal experimentation, 4.48 Psychosis premiered posthumously in 2000 and remains a challenging, essential work.

This production is directed by Hannah Ottenfeld as part of Backyard Theater Company’s 2025–2026 season.
