FAQs
- What is Semba
Semba is a traditional music and dance from Angola and the foundation of Kizomba. The name comes from “massemba,” meaning a symbolic “belly touch,” reflecting connection and playfulness between partners. As a dance, Semba is lively, rhythmic, and expressive, featuring playful footwork, improvisation, and strong social interaction, often danced in circles. Musically, it is polyrhythmic and rooted in Angolan traditions, with influences from styles like coladeira and rumba, and its lyrics often tell stories of everyday life, culture, and community.
- Am I Ready to Try This Course?
We recommend that anyone joining this course is already familiar with the fundamental steps of Kizomba, as this will help you keep up with the pace and get the most out of the training. If you’re not completely sure where you sit, feel free to reach out—we’re more than happy to guide you and help you decide if it’s the right fit for you!
- Will I Need to Be Physically Fit for the Tricks and Lifts?
Semba is so much more than just tricks and lifts, so there’s no need to have prior experience or a specific level of fitness to join. While general fitness can be helpful, what really matters is technique. Everything in this course is taught with a strong focus on precision, control, and safety—so you’ll learn how to execute movements in a way that’s both effective and comfortable for the social dance floor.
- Can I Drop in Casually To the Class?
Yes of course you may. The class will build progressively however each content will be different to the one previously introduced so you are welcome to drop in at any given week and still get all the information you need to be able to progress through the class on that day.
