Join Janette Murrungun from the remote community of Numbulwar in South East Arnhem Land for a hands-on weaving workshop that celebrates one of the oldest continuous textile traditions in Australia.

For thousands of years, Numburindi people have practised weaving, passing knowledge and techniques from generation to generation. Using locally harvested fibres such as pandanus, bark and vines, artists create beautiful and functional woven objects that reflect deep connections to Country, culture and community. Today, many weavers also incorporate reclaimed and found materials into their practice, transforming discarded items into vibrant works while helping to care for the environment.

In this workshop, Janette will introduce participants to the traditional technique of coil weaving and guide them through the process of creating the base of a small basket. Along the way, participants will learn about Maguj (pandanus) and Nanja (repurposed ghost nets) collected from the shores of Numbulwar, and the cultural significance of weaving within her community.

As Janette says:

Each participant will receive a Numbulwar Numburindi Arts Weaving Kit and guidance to continue weaving at home. Using colourful raffia and step-by-step instruction, participants will learn the fundamentals of weaving and gain the confidence to continue exploring the practice with fibres they source themselves.

Suitable for beginners, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from an experienced cultural practitioner while engaging with a living tradition of making, storytelling and connection.
