4. Meeting Focus:

‘CALD Communities: An understanding of language education challenges and trends.'
Presentation by D Bo Hu, Madeleine Parker, and Blackburn English Language School.

Dr. Bo Hu is the National School Partnerships Manager at Together For Humanity. Bo is passionate about equipping young people and educators with skills to navigate the complexities of today’s world. He oversees TFH's Intercultural Understanding Partnership Program, supporting school communities with projects that address cross-cultural challenges.

Madeleine Parker (BA, DipEd, MEd), is a Senior Project Officer at the Department of Education. She oversees the English as an Additional Language (EAL) program for the North East Victoria Region. Madeleine works with school leadership teams, teachers, and support staff to ensure the best educational outcomes for migrant and refugee background students. Before this role, Madeleine taught EAL, up to the Year 12 level, at numerous schools, as well as at Blackburn English Language School. She is passionate about access and equity in education for all students regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.

Mairead Hannan is the Principal of Blackburn English Language School which is part of the New Arrival Program (NAP). It provides intensive English language programs to primary and secondary-aged newly arrived students from language backgrounds other than English (LBoTE). 

Mairead Hannan has extensive experience in the education of English as an additional language (EAL) learners in mainstream and new arrivals schools, as a lecturer in TESOL at the University of Melbourne and as president of the professional association VicTESOL, where she oversaw professional learning for Victorian teachers and advocated for equity and quality education for bilingual students at the state and national level.
