Course Description

If you’ve always wanted to paint a portrait in oils, this course focuses on the basic principles. You will learn the principles of tonal values, shades of complexion and colour mixing incorporating the techniques required with painting in oils including colour mixing to produce the underlying process of the Grisaille technique followed by colour. The use of photographic references will be your guide as you learn to train your eye in achieving your original artwork.

About the Artist

Artist Alexandra Spargo has achieved beautiful realism portraits under the tutelage of award-winning realism artist John Paul. Described by John Paul as a “Natural” Alexandra has created beautiful artworks including famous 70’s heartthrob John Paul Young and Fremantle Legend, Artist Horatio T Birdbath.

Along with portraits of famous singers past and present, Alexandra has painted lifelike portraits of family and friends, including pet portraits which she won 1st prize at the Melville Art Awards for her pastel drawing (self-taught) of an Alaskan Malamute.

She has been a finalist in the Mandorla Christian Thematic Art Awards in 2018 and 2021 and has successfully exhibited her works throughout cafes and galleries in Perth.

What you need to bring

A notebook and pen
Sharp pencil
Rag
Refined Linseed Oil
Low Odour Turpentine or Art Spectrum Artists Turpentine
Small jar with lid to take home medium.
Stretched Canvas or Canvas board (A3)
Black & White and Colour photocopy of person to be painted. (This must be the same size of the canvas.)
A selection of brushes. I prefer soft bristle compared to hog hair and Bunnings have a good cheap option ranging from $1.60 to $5 each. I suggest you get a couple of some of the sizes as you will need them for blending.

You will need to go to either Art & Craft World, Jacksons or Oxlandes to get the very fine brushes needed for the finer detailing of artwork. These are more expensive starting from $5+.
