A Christian future for the church: at what price?
Description
At this month's Progressive Christianity Forum Rt Rev Prof Stephen Pickard will present, via Zoom from Canberra, on the topic A Christian future for the church: at what price?
Professor Pickard is a former Assistant Bishop in the Dioceses of Adelaide, and Canberra & Goulburn. For nine years until his retirement in 2022, he served as Executive Director of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, Charles Sturt University (CSU), where he continues as an adjunct Professor. He was previously head of the School of Theology at CSU and Director of St Mark’s National Theological Centre in Canberra. Professor Pickard is a recipient of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lambeth Award, The Cross of St Augustine, in recognition of his service to the Anglican Communion as a theologian, teacher and bishop.
To quote the late Rabbi Sacks "When religion turns men into murderers, God weeps." What about the way of Jesus? At its heart Christianity is about a new community of peace; a community that no longer lives bound by hostilities; a community where differences are welcomed and no longer regarded as impediments to peace, but part of the rich diversity of God’s intention for the world; a community to practise the lost arts of hospitality and generosity. Is this just all too idealistic or might it offer the potential for a peaceable kingdom; even, dare we hope, a peaceable church?
Professor Pickard will draw on his rich background to address such issues in his August presentation. You are welcome to hear him online or on the big screen at the Effective Living Centre, Wayville.
