A Circus in the City
Event description
Your cat’s run away,
you’re always fighting with mum,
you spend all your time talking to a clown
and you can’t even marry Joe Jonas.Â
What do you do?
You run.
This new performance work, co-devised by the Werkz Youth Ensemble, takes audiences to a circus in the big city. In this circus, clowns, trapezists, mimes and ringmasters tell the story of a teen's internal world: one where Kidd is struggling with mental health, family, school and the sudden emergence of an imaginary best friend, whose clownish behaviour causes all kinds of mayhem. When faced with these tough times, Kidd decides to run away and join the circus. But while tying up every loose end, saying goodbyes and packing their bags, things prove to be more complicated than ever expected.Â
Alongside these performances, Dramawerkz's Design class have created an installation of the protagonist's bedroom that can be accessed before and after each performance. Inside the bedroom, you'll find insights into the Kidd's day-to-day, their diary, their favourite things and some additions from their imaginary best friend. The installation can be viewed on December 9 between 2:00pm and 7:30pm.
