Event description

This introductory interactive workshop is primarily intended for people who engage with families and whanau who may be experiencing family violence and associated family harm.

While several aspects of family violence will be introduced, the primary focus will focus on intimate partner violence (IPV). While the workshop serves as an 'introduction', feedback from more experienced attendees confirmed they also found it useful to refresh and update existing knowledge.

Rob has worked in the family violence sector for over 30 years. He shares his experience as a police officer, a national and international advisor, a member of the Family Safety Team National Steering Committee and the New Zealand Family Violence Death Review Committee. He has developed and delivered training to many groups throughout New Zealand and the Pacific on a range of family violence-related topics.

Rob will be discussing:

  • Signs, symptoms and theories associated with intimate partner violence, namely the cycle of violence, power and control, and coercive control.
  • Some of the definitions, behaviours and frameworks associated with family violence.
  • Factors impacting on safe practice when working with LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
  • How to start the 'difficult conversations with 'clients'.
  • Responding to positive disclosures or suspected family violence.
  • Awareness of court orders, police safety orders and associated initiatives.
  • Alongside other contemporary issues, with room for topics raised by participants.

The cost of this event has been heavily subsidised by Selwyn Safer Families Trust and includes morning / afternoon tea and a light lunch. Spaces are strictly limited to 30 so please be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
