Work-related burnout, psychological injury, and suicidality have remained deeply entrenched in medicine and across the health system for decades.

Drawing on extensive experience as both a clinician and non-executive director, Adjunct Professor Leanne Rowe AM will explore practical solutions to these intractable problems by answering the question: “How can we create a psychologically safe healthcare culture so that clinicians can thrive?”

Psychological safety is fundamental to thriving workplaces where clinicians can speak up, challenge unsafe practices, ask for help, learn from mistakes, and contribute fully without fear of humiliation, retaliation or other adverse career consequences. It overlaps with new mandated workplace requirements to identify, assess and minimise psychosocial hazards and risks in health care.

What makes this conversation different is the opportunity created by recent ground-breaking work health and safety law reforms, including serious personal and organisational penalties for employer non-compliance - as well as vicarious liability for the adverse actions of others who perpetrate workplace abuses such as bullying, discrimination, racism, sexual harassment, or verbal and physical violence.
