A focus on clinical leadership to ensure psychological safety for doctors

Work-related burnout, psychological injury, and suicidality have remained deeply entrenched in medicine and across the health system for decades.
Drawing on extensive experience as both a clinician and non-executive director, Adjunct Professor Leanne Rowe AM will explore practical solutions to these intractable problems by answering the question: “How can we create a psychologically safe healthcare culture so that clinicians can thrive?”
Psychological safety is fundamental to thriving workplaces where clinicians can speak up, challenge unsafe practices, ask for help, learn from mistakes, and contribute fully without fear of humiliation, retaliation or other adverse career consequences. It overlaps with new mandated workplace requirements to identify, assess and minimise psychosocial hazards and risks in health care.
What makes this conversation different is the opportunity created by recent ground-breaking work health and safety law reforms, including serious personal and organisational penalties for employer non-compliance - as well as vicarious liability for the adverse actions of others who perpetrate workplace abuses such as bullying, discrimination, racism, sexual harassment, or verbal and physical violence.
Whether you are a medical student or junior doctor, senior clinician, medical officer, employer, director, officer or other healthcare leader, this webinar will examine what you can do and advocate for now - including collectively pushing for stronger accountability from medical organisations and the health system, with psychological safety fully embedded rather than merely encouraged.
Professor Rowe will also draw on her recent work establishing the Safe Dr initiative (www.safedr.org), which empowers clinicians to understand their new human rights at work.

Adjunct Professor Leanne Rowe - presenter
Adjunct Professor Leanne Rowe AM, MD, MBBS, FRACGP, FAICD is an experienced medical practitioner, health leader, non-executive director and medical writer with more than 40 years’ experience across Australia’s public and private health systems. She has held senior clinical leadership and governance roles across healthcare, including Deputy Chancellor of Monash University, and as a non-executive director of organisations including the RACGP, Medibank Private, Bupa ANZ, beyondblue, Barwon Health and the I-MED Radiology Network. A long-standing rural GP, Leanne has particular expertise in clinical governance, workplace mental injury and the health of clinicians. She is co-author, with Professor Michael Kidd AO, of the 2nd edition of the book Every Doctor: Healthier Doctors = Healthier Patients. Recently she has created the Safe Dr initiative www.safedr.org which empowers clinicians to understand their human rights at work, seek support early, speak up safely, and to create safer health workplaces. Leanne was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to medicine and has received major awards from the Australian Medical Association and the RACGP.

Dr Margaret Kay AM - host
Dr Margaret Kay AM is Chair of the Doctors’ Health Alliance and a GP with over 20 years’ experience in doctors’ health as a clinician and researcher. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland. Her PhD focused on physician health. She has published widely on physician health and continues to lead national work in this field. She was awarded an Order of Australia in 2022 for her contribution to medicine and medical education.
