    Event description

Join celebrated cellist Christopher Pidcock (Sydney Symphony) for a relaxed afternoon of music, delving into some of the greatest pieces of music ever written for the cello.

Inspired by the vibrant arts community and surroundings of Gulgong, Christopher will perform and speak to his audience about the music he has chosen for this concert.

The concert will feature J.S Bach's 5th Solo Cello Suite in C minor, written in 1723. The 5th Suite is an immensely profound work, with moods ranging from sorrow, darkness and hope.

Christopher's performance of the Suite's incorporate the use of ornamentation, based on his research of 18th and 19th century performance practices.

Christopher will also present several more recent works for the cello, including a charming little piece by Elena Kats-Chernin, whose music has been performed in the Gulgong Opera House recently.

Christopher will perform his own arrangement of the legendary jazz standard "God Bless the Child", expanded by the great jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy.

The concert will also feature an amazingly innovative work by Iannis Xenakis for solo cello, called Nomos Alpha (Greek: Νόμος α΄). Written in 1965, this is perhaps Xenakis's most well known example of symbolic music, using the 24 rotations of a cube as the inspiration for musical material. It features many incredible colours and textures for the cellist to perform.

Christopher will also play his own arrangement of the Lento e sotto voce from Paul Ben-Haim's Solo Violin Sonata, as a tribute to his cello teacher Uzi Wiesel, as well as a song by the late Iowa cellist-singer songwriter, Arthur Russell.

Lastly, Christopher will perform some of his own music for cello, voice and electronics.

Come and experience a truly memorable afternoon of music.

    Young and old welcome!
