Difficult conversations are one of the things managers tell me they struggle with most. We know we need to have them and, very often, we even know roughly what we need to say. The tricky bit is actually doing it.

Because there's another human involved.

And, of course, we're human too.

We worry about how they'll react, whether we'll upset them, whether we'll say the wrong thing or make the situation worse. Sometimes avoiding the conversation feels considerably easier, at least in the short term.

Unfortunately, the things we don't talk about rarely disappear. Small frustrations grow, misunderstandings become assumptions and problems that might once have been relatively straightforward become increasingly difficult to untangle. There isn't a script that will make every difficult conversation easy. Humans are far too complicated for that.

What we can do is understand a little more about what's happening, prepare ourselves well and build a toolkit that gives us more confidence when the moment arrives.

Because having difficult conversations well isn't about getting every word right.

It's about being able to stay in the conversation when it matters.
