A Museum on Kaurna Yarta: An Introduction to the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery at the South Australian Museum
Event description
Do you want to take your students to the South Australian Museum to discover Australian Aboriginal cultures and perspectives but don’t know where to start? Worried about giving the wrong information or unsure about how to approach this topic?
This event is for you!
Join our Aboriginal Education Program Coordinator, Mirning woman Eva Wilson on a guided tour of the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery and the temporary exhibition Arabana Yanhi! Tanganekald Yan! Keeping Ancestral Voices Alive. Eva will take you through our permanent displays, giving practical examples of how teachers of all year levels can lead students through the gallery and make connections to classroom learning.
Learn the stories and histories behind some of the most popular objects on display as well as some lesser-known treasures. Discover how to guide your students through the gallery with respect and authenticity, including policies on photography and language. Hear about how the South Australian Museum is working with communities to support and promote at-risk Aboriginal languages in South Australia and receive a FREE set of Arabana or Tanganekald language flashcards you can use in your classroom.
At the end of this PD you will:
- Feel confident taking classes through the Aboriginal Cultures gallery on your next excursion.
- Know how and where to access South Australian Museum teaching resources.
- Receive a free pack of language flash cards, in either Arabana or Tanganekald.
- Receive a printed resource pack.
- Receive a certificate for 2 hours of professional development.
Please note that this event is not catered as food and drink cannot be consumed in the galleries. You are welcome to bring a sealed water bottle with you.
