Event description

A NIGHT AT THE PROMS: All Things British

In Albert Hall Proms tradition, the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the end of the year with an all-British programme of music and vibrant colour.

The Proms concert will have special significance this year, as it will be Adrian King’s final concert as Conductor. Well known to Sunshine Coast orchestral and choral audiences, the esteemed conductor is retiring his baton after a 15 year tenure as the orchestra’s Musical Director, to travel and spend more time with his family.

Mr King’s successor as Conductor and Musical Director of the SCSO will be Dr Fletcher Mitchell. Dr Mitchell is an international euphonium soloist based in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and has been a guest soloist, conductor, adjudicator, and educator in more than 40 countries. He is the euphonium lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, low brass lecturer at the University of Queensland and holds a Ph.D for his research into Australian repertoire for the solo euphonium.

Dr Mitchell will mark the beginning of his permanent association with the SCSO by performing at the Proms concert. He will play solo euphonium for Fantasy on ‘Rule Britannia’.

A Night at the Proms will be the final concert in the Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary year and will also showcase guest soloists. Solo violinist, Rhys Williams will play the achingly beautiful Lark Ascending, and mesmerising soprano, Judit Molnar will sing perennial favourites Jerusalem, Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Pomp and Circumstance. For music lovers, or those wanting to venture into live performances of orchestral music, A Night at the Proms will be a high-spirited delight in the festive season calendar.

A bar service will be available before the concert and during the interval.
