How can we connect and regenerate nature in our urban context?

In the previous session, we explored ideas of interconnecting spheres ranging from planetary, to Melbourne city and then our local river.

In this session, we will touch on the theme of nature connection ranging from human and non-human spheres in order to align ourselves to the larger systems, using the knowledge in Biophilic design, Health Benefits, and Biodiversity Inclusive Design.

We'll be working through a series of ideas and then short applications in workshop style across the group to surface multiple perspectives and experiences of these topics. As such the group size has been kept intentionally small to encourage conversation and connection.

These events are an opportunity to hear about work in regenerative practice and an opportunity to connect with other practitioners working in placemaking - whether that’s in the built environment, community development or policy settings. It has been set up by an emerging group of built environment professionals interested in growing a network of peers to enable and support regeneration in Melbourne - convened by Regen Melbourne.

Speakers
Christhina Candido

A/Prof Candido leads the SHE (Sustainable and Healthy Environments) Lab at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. Dr Candido is a WELL Faculty and IWBI’s Global Research Advisory member. Her research interest and expertise are related to the design, experience and performance of spaces. Her projects and publications are related to the fields of Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), new ways of working and learning, and climate responsive design in tropical and subtropical climates.

Cristina Hernandez Santin, PhD candidate, RMIT, Biodiversity Inclusive Design

Cristina is an ecologist with over 10 years of experience bringing together design practice and ecology through regenerative development. In Mexico, after graduating as an ecologist, she worked directly with landscape architects to apply ecological principles to the design of sustainable landscapes. Then pursued a degree in Environment and Sustainable Cities (2014-2015) working with the concept of Biodiversity Sensitive Design and Regenerative Design. Since then, she has coordinated education and research projects on ‘place-based development’. Her current research aims to translate ecological knowledge to support ‘place’ for both humans and non-humans to coexist. Specifically, she aspires to merge the idea of participatory design with ecology through biodiversity inclusive design to increase the resilience of our urban areas.

Shanica Saenrak Hall, National Sustainability Lead, NBRS

Shanica is a dedicated architect and sustainability lead who has worked in various environments. She has led and developed designs for projects across the community, health, senior living, education, and residential sectors. Shanica has a thorough understanding of global and local sustainability issues, allowing her to provide creative ideas for making buildings more sustainable. Shanica is a Living Future Accredited Professional, Certified Passivhaus Designer, WELL Accredited Professional, Green Star Accredited Professional (Buildings, Communities and Performance), member of WELL Health Equity Advisory, WELL Community Concept, GBCA People & Wellbeing Expert Reference Panel and Steering Committee of Regen Melbourne Places.
