A Songwriting Showcase – Free Songwriting Workshop
Have you ever wanted to write a song, tell a story through music, or learn more about the creative process behind songwriting?
Join Townsville artists Sarah Lane, Joshua Lane (The Lanes), Rudy Matoy and Jimmy James for a free 90-minute interactive songwriting workshop designed to inspire creativity, build confidence and develop practical songwriting skills.
Suitable for all ages and experience levels, this hands-on workshop will explore the foundations of songwriting, including lyric writing, storytelling, song structure, melody development and creative expression. Whether you’re an aspiring songwriter, a musician looking to develop new skills, or simply curious about the art of songwriting, this workshop provides a welcoming and supportive environment to learn and participate.
Participants will gain insight into how songs are created, from the first spark of an idea through to a finished piece of music. Facilitators will share their own creative processes, songwriting techniques and personal experiences as working musicians, offering practical advice and encouragement throughout the session.
The workshop features four experienced local artists with diverse musical backgrounds. Sarah and Joshua Lane perform as The Lanes, a First Nations sibling folk-country duo known for their original songs and rich storytelling. Joshua Lane is the winner of the Townsville Folk Festival Amnesty International Human Rights Songwriting Competition for his song Let Him Run, which explores Indigenous youth justice. Participants will also learn from Rudy Matoy, recipient of the 2025 Dennis ‘Mop’ Conlon Scholarship, and Jimmy James, a respected Townsville performer and professional singing and guitar teacher at Sing Smart Studios.
Throughout the workshop, participants will have opportunities to contribute ideas, collaborate with others and experiment with songwriting techniques in a relaxed and inclusive setting. No prior musical experience is required, and participants are welcome to bring notebooks, instruments or simply their enthusiasm for music and creativity.
Complimentary catering will be provided by Blak Brew Haus, creating an opportunity for participants to connect with fellow creatives, artists and community members in a welcoming and supportive environment.

This workshop is part of A Songwriting Showcase, a community arts initiative celebrating original music, storytelling and creative participation in Townsville. The project aims to strengthen community connection, support artistic development and provide accessible opportunities for people to engage with the arts.

The Lanes
The Lanes are a First Nations sibling folk-country duo from Townsville, North Queensland, comprising Sarah Lane (vocals and violin) and Joshua Lane (vocals and guitar). Their original music blends rich harmonies, heartfelt storytelling and contemporary Australian folk influences, drawing on personal experiences, family, culture and community. Known for their authentic songwriting and engaging live performances, The Lanes have performed at festivals, community events and arts programs throughout North Queensland, including the North Australia Festival of Arts (NAFA). Joshua Lane is the winner of the Townsville Folk Festival Amnesty International Human Rights Songwriting Competition for his original song Let Him Run, which explores the experiences of Indigenous young people within the youth justice system. Through their music, The Lanes create meaningful connections with audiences, sharing stories of identity, resilience, belonging and place while celebrating the diverse voices and experiences of regional Australia.
Rudy Matoy
Rudy Matoy is an emerging Townsville musician, songwriter and performer whose music is shaped by personal experiences, community connection and a passion for storytelling through song. In 2025, Rudy was awarded the Dennis ‘Mop’ Conlon Scholarship, recognising his artistic development and contribution to the North Queensland music community. Known for his authentic approach to songwriting and engaging live performances, Rudy brings a fresh perspective to the local music scene. His work explores themes of identity, resilience, relationships and everyday life, connecting with audiences through honest lyrics and heartfelt performances. Through both solo performances and collaborative projects, Rudy continues to build his reputation as a talented and promising artist within the region.
Jimmy James Live
Jimmy James is a popular Townsville performer, professional singing teacher and guitar instructor at Sing Smart Studios. Known for his engaging live performances, strong musicianship and authentic connection with audiences, Jimmy has become a respected figure within the North Queensland music community. Drawing on extensive experience as both a performer and educator, Jimmy combines technical skill with a genuine passion for helping others develop their musical abilities. His performances are characterised by heartfelt storytelling, memorable songs and a warm stage presence that resonates with audiences of all ages. Alongside his teaching work at Sing Smart Studios, Jimmy remains an active contributor to Townsville's vibrant live music scene, performing at community events, venues and festivals throughout the region. His commitment to music education and live performance continues to inspire emerging artists while strengthening the local creative community.
