Missionvale Australia "A South African Night Out" Charity Event
Event description
We would like to invite you to this year’s Missionvale Charity evening.
Last year, our “South African Night In” event raised close to $50,000 to support the beautiful children of Missionvale, providing food, education, and health care. Missionvale is an incredibly poor shack land township near Port Elizabeth and the Care Centre was founded by the late Irish Nun, Sister Ethel, three decades ago. As COVID-19 continues to hit this township hard not so much in terms of mortality, but the economic impact through loss of jobs and hunger, our donations have never been more important. Missionvale Australia is the Care Centre’s biggest financial support.
Our 2022 Charity Event
Missionvale is delighted to invite you to join us at our first "A South African Night Out” at Afro-centric fine dining restaurant, Meat & Wine Co. Barangaroo. The action-packed evening will again feature a star-studded line-up of speakers with a strong South African flavour, a signature Meat & Wine Co. menu featuring the world-class dishes it has become famous for, and this year will also include a raffle on the night.
We are delighted that the evening will again be hosted by Nine Network Australia’s Christine Ahern and Clint Stanaway, who have visited and volunteered at Missionvale in Nelson Mandela Bay.
About our speakers
- Lovemore N'dou, Three-time World Champion Boxer turned Lawyer. As a child growing up in South Africa, Lovemore Ndou experienced poverty and the injustices of the apartheid system, witnessed atrocities committed against his family and community, was a victim of police brutality and saw his best friend gunned down in a street protest. Yet, against all odds, Lovemore succeeded and rose through the ranks to become a three-time world boxing champion and then a successful lawyer, while making Australia his home. He has been called “The Brainiest Boxer in History” courtesy of his extraordinary journey of self-education that has delivered seven university degrees. He now runs a successful Sydney legal firm in southern Sydney. His extraordinary life story has recently been documented in the book TOUGH LOVE (New Holland).
- Dr Meredith Burgmann was an Academic and a former Labor MP and President of the NSW Legislative Council. She is famous for her anti-apartheid campaigning and was arrested on many occasions. She has remained involved with South African and Zimbabwean democracy struggles since then. After retiring from Parliament, she was elected President of the Australian Council for International Development - the peak body for Aid and Development agencies in Australia. She has authored four books.
