This special Lunar New Year program, supporting the Dear Belly exhibition, features an illustrated talk with comedian Jennifer Wong (Chopsticks or Fork? on ABC TV) exploring the rich history of Chinese food in Australia.

Chinese food has been part of Australian life for many generations, long before the local Chinese restaurant became a familiar feature of almost every town. From the goldfields and market gardens of the nineteenth century to the bustling Chinatowns and suburban takeaways of today, Chinese cooks, restaurant owners and market gardeners helped shape what and how Australia eats.

From early Cantonese kitchens to Australian Chinese menus, discover stories of migration, resilience and family businesses that fed generations and built cultural bridges.
