What could our future suburbs look like?

Step inside one of the city’s most productive food gardens and see how a small urban space grows thousands of dollars of produce every year while lowering energy bills, sheltering the home from extreme heat, building food security, community connections and climate resilience.

‘The Plummery‘ is a tiny 1/14th acre but produces almost all the household’s veggies, herbs, fruit and quail eggs. In 2020, the garden produced 450kg of herbs, vegies, fruit and eggs with about 4 hours management each week.

The Plummery emphasises low-tech, DIY techniques with minimal effort and inputs, making the most of onsite resources and free local materials. The garden features year round, diverse fruit and vegetable production and Japanese quail (aka 'mini chickens'!) in a low maintenance deep litter aviary. There’s also a simple DIY portable garden suitable for renters, balconies, units etc. The older house has been retrofitted for comfort and sustainability, and uses a fraction of the average water and electricity use with just a 1kW solar system and no fancy technology.

What can we do right now to make the best of what we’ve got? In this guided tour you’ll learn how restoring soil health, reconnecting water and nutrient cycles, and creating habitat, can repair the urban ecosystem and help us thrive through the challenging times ahead.

The Plummery has been featured on Gardening Australia, Happen Films and in RetroSuburbia.
