Lowering heating hot water temps to reduce electrification capex and opex

Learn how to lower heating hot water (HHW) temperatures in commercial buildings to significantly reduce the capex and opex associated with switching heating from gas boilers to heat pumps - a key step for building electrification.

Hosted at the University Of Technology (UTS) in Sydney, by A2EP CEO Jarrod Leak, A2EP Program Director - Commercial, Peter Haenke, and A2EP Technical Advisor, Michael Snow.

The Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP) is delivering two commercial building electrification workshops, one each in Melbourne and Sydney ahead of the 2026 winter season. Building on successful workshops delivered in 2025, the revised program places a stronger emphasis on building owner and manager capability, informed consultant engagement, risk management, and real-world case studies from organisations already progressing electrification programs.

Each four-hour workshop will combine practical guidance, peer learning, and first-hand case studies from leading building owners and operators. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend site tours of operational heat pump installations, reinforcing learning through real-world application. Last year’s program saw dozens of buildings undergo HHW temperature lowering programs during the winter of 2025, resulting in >80% of buildings reducing HHW temperatures to 55C which will greatly reduce the CAPEX and OPEX of the electrified heating solution.

Before the workshop, there will be a guided site tour of 200 George St's new electrification project. The EY Centre at 200 George Street is nearing completion of its transition away from base building gas infrastructure. Gas boilers have been replaced with heat pumps to supply both domestic hot water and heating hot water for air conditioning systems.

We'll also visit Victoria Park Pool facilities. The site features three CS-i250 pool heat pumps, with an actuator valve allowing one unit to heat the wader pool during shoulder seasons and summer months. A CO₂ potable hot water system is also installed, with all equipment integrated into the building management system (BMS).
