ActionAid Sydney and the USYD Fashion Revolution activists have collaborated to host a screening of Made in Bangladesh - a documentary that exposes the exploitation and unsafe working conditions within garment factories in Bangladesh.

About the film:

Made in Bangladesh follows the journey of a textile worker fighting for employee rights after a co-worker is killed in a fire at her factory.

Shimu, 23, works in a clothing factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Faced with difficult conditions at work, she decides to start a union with her co-workers.

Despite threats from the management and disapproval of her husband, Shimu is determined to go on. Together the women must fight and find a way.

Ever wondered how we, as individuals, can push for systemic change and hold brands accountable for the workers making their clothes? Then come network with like-minded people interested in garment workers’ rights, sustainable and ethical fashion. Learn all about how we can make choices as consumers and push for brands like Jay Jays, Dotti and Just Jeans to step up their commitment for the women who make their clothes.

We will also be announcing guest speakers closer to the date to speak to the exploitation within the garment industry and how we can improve it – stay tuned!

Fashion Revolution was founded in the wake of the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, which killed thousands of garment workers and has become the world’s largest fashion activism movement with a vision to conserve and restore the environment and values people over profit and growth.

This event is also part of ActionAid Australia's #SheWearstheCost campaign to protect garment worker’s rights and step up the commitment of big fashion brands like Jay Jays, Just Jeans, and Dotti to commit to fundamental labour rights.

We need to tell these brands that our community values the rights of garment workers.
