Award-winning journalist Marc Fennell plunges into the heart of masculinity in Australia, exploring the rise of the online world of the manosphere, the machinery cashing in on the search for what it means to be a man and what’s shaping the next generation.
This event will screen segments from the series followed by a panel discussion that will explore ways to equip young men and boys to engage with healthy models of manhood and how that impacts the wider society.
The State of Man premieres Tuesday 13 October on ABC iview and ABC TV.

Host, Beverley Wang
Beverley Wang is a journalist and broadcaster based in Naarm/Melbourne. She’s the ABC’s culture correspondent and a trusted presence on ABC Radio National, where she hosts the Friday talkback edition of Life Matters.
Panellist, Tarang Chawla
Tarang Chawla is a leading Australian expert on masculinity, misogyny and the prevention of men’s violence against women. He holds qualifications in law, media and gender studies from the University of Melbourne and serves on the Australian Government’s Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Advisory Council. An educator, writer and former Victorian Multicultural Commissioner, he co-founded Not One More Niki following the murder of his younger sister Nikita by her partner in 2015.
Panellist, Alice Drew
Alice Drew is Senior Advisor, Research and Evaluation, Campaigns at Our Watch, where she leads research to support The Line. Her work focuses on understanding young people and the social and cultural influences that shape their attitudes and behaviours, with the aim of supporting young people to have healthy and respectful relationships and preventing gender-based violence.
Panellist, Josh Glover
Josh is a Senior Facilitator and Product Coordinator at The Man Cave. Over the past six years, he has worked with more than 10,000 young people in youth education, community development, and healthy masculinity spaces. He is most passionate about helping young men navigate their complicated emotional and social worlds to become compassionate, generous men living purposeful and connected lives
Panellist, Xavier Brenton
Xav is a youth worker and aspiring social worker who is passionate about supporting young people to achieve positive life outcomes. Having worked across prevention and intervention settings, he is focussed on building his career on a foundation of social justice and equity principles.
