With the 2026 Census just around the corner on 11 August, join ACT Shelter and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for an online information session exploring how homelessness is counted in the Census, why this data matters, and how frontline services and community organisations can help support the most accurate count possible.

The Census provides Australia's most comprehensive picture of homelessness and housing need. It informs planning, policy and investment, while providing the evidence that advocates rely on to make the case for more social housing and to hold governments accountable.

Ensuring an accurate count is critical for people experiencing homelessness and who are most at risk of being missed.

The session will cover:

Why Census homelessness data matters and how it is used to inform policy and planning.
How homelessness is defined and counted through the Census.
What organisations can do before and on Census night to support an accurate count.
How the ABS are working in partnership with the homelessness sector throughout the Census.
An opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A.

This session is ideal for homelessness and housing services, community organisations, researchers, policymakers and anyone interested in understanding how Census homelessness data is collected and used to drive better housing and homelessness outcomes.
