ACA presents...

A LIE OF THE MIND

Written by Sam Shepard, Directed by Johann Walraven, featuring members of the Graduating Company of 2025.

A Lie of the Mind is about two families brought together by the marriage of Jake and Beth, and the resulting disconnect between those families, and within their own. The play explores what it means to be a man in America and how ideas about gender and national identity get tangled up. It also highlights the struggles women face, being the ones who carry the burden of history and culture forward, but they’re often the ones who get hurt in that process.

We see people struggle to really connect with each other through a lot of pain—abandonment, violence—and it leaves everyone drifting. Memories feel fuzzy or even lost, just like the relationships between the characters. Family legacies start to blur, everyone is lost, with nowhere solid to land and nowhere familiar to return to.
