About this play:
A trivial comedy for serious people!
Algernon and Jack are good friends who fabricate delicious double lives to escape the straitjacket of social norms and to find the lovers they desire. So when Jack proposes to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolyn under the pseudonym of ‘Ernest’ and Algernon proposes to Jack’s ward Cecily also under the pseudonym of ‘Ernest’, it all becomes especially inconvenient, not to say confusing. In truth, no one is particularly earnest, except the imperious Lady Bracknell, who takes a dim view of everything.
Sparkling with devilish quips, this gold-standard comedy sings with contemporary relevance, shrewdly lampooning the snobbery and hypocrisy of extreme wealth and excess. Yet between the absurd and masterful theatrics, the beating heart of Wilde’s humanity exposes itself.
