The transition to a net-zero and circular economy presents a significant challenge for energy-intensive industries worldwide. This public lecture, Accelerating Decarbonisation Through Industry Hubs: Lessons from Europe’s Experience, explores how European industrial hubs have navigated the shift toward sustainability and reduced emissions in sectors such as steel, cement, chemicals, and aluminium. Drawing on comprehensive research, policy evaluations, and industry case studies, the session will provide critical insights into the effectiveness of various decarbonisation approaches and their implications for South Australia’s industrial future.

The lecture will delve into the pivotal role of circular economy principles in complementing technological innovations, with evidence suggesting that material efficiency strategies could contribute up to 50% of required emission reductions by 2050. Additionally, it will highlight the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, illustrated by successful European initiatives such as Sweden’s HYBRIT project and Denmark’s Kalundborg industrial symbiosis network.

Key discussion points will include the necessity of region-specific transition pathways, the economic and technical barriers still facing breakthrough technologies, and the disparities in decarbonisation progress across Europe. For policymakers, the session will outline the need for integrated policy frameworks, infrastructure coordination, and financial mechanisms such as Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfDs) to support sustainable industrial investment. Industry stakeholders will gain insights into strategic planning, business model innovations, and the role of digital technologies in enabling circular economy transitions.

By examining Europe's experience, this lecture will offer valuable lessons for South Australia’s own net-zero transition, fostering a discussion on how local industries can adapt and thrive in a low-carbon economy. Professor Göran Roos

Professor Roos is a Swedish academic, technologist, author, and businessman. He is one of the founders of modern intellectual capital science and a recognised world expert in the fields of innovation management, industrial and innovation policy, and strategy.

He is an advisor to organisations and governments around the globe and holds visiting professorships in Australia, Finland, UK and Norway. Göran is a CSIRO Affiliate and a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Science and Engineering (ATSE) and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).

Organised by Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Resources, University of Adelaide, the event will include space for discussion, encouraging participants to explore how these global insights can be applied locally. A detailed agenda will follow.
