ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Accidental Counselling Skills: Purposeful Conversations is a one-day experiential learning program which provides you with practical skills to manage challenging conversations. Learn how to recognise when someone is experiencing thoughts of suicide, ask directly if they are thinking of suicide and connect them to services and support to help keep them safe. These conversations may arise at any time in the most unexpected way. Learning how to best give support and guidance to this exchange by making it a purposeful conversation could save a life.
COURSE CONTENT
In this course, we will explore:
Key micro-skills to respond to challenging conversations
Understanding the needs of a person in crisis and how to respond appropriately
How to identify and avoid the roadblocks to effective and empathic communication
How to set and maintain helpful boundaries
How to connect someone to further help when necessary
How to manage your own wellbeing needs.
How to recognise when someone is experiencing thoughts of suicide
How to ask directly if they are thinking of suicide
How to connect them to services and support to help keep them safe.
YOUR WORKSHOP FACILITATOR
Karen Prestidge has over 25 years experience in brief crisis intervention, community recovery and not-for-profit management, during which time she has led teams in providing a meaningful and effective response to individuals and communities in times of crisis. Karen is a skilled facilitator who creates safe and engaging spaces where insights and learning can occur.
