ACE for Coursework Success: Reading Critically

ACE for Coursework Success is free to all Adelaide University students by coursework seeking to practise academic skills and strategies to help improve their comprehension and succeed in assignments.

This workshop focuses on critical reading skills, which are crucial for academic success. 

The workshop covers:  

• reading for gist: predicting content and determining relevance by using prior knowledge, skimming the structural features of a text, and using context clues to deduce the meaning of words

• reading with purpose to save time and address an assignment task

• close reading: applying critical questions to evaluate a text for genre, purpose, bias, author perspective, logic and consistency 

• note-taking strategies to record ideas, avoid plagiarism, and distinguish your own ideas from the ideas of authors 

• practice reading task to apply critical reading and note-taking skills
