How to recite an Acknowledgement of Country in Kaurna language
Event description
While a traditional "Welcome to Country" is carried out by an Aboriginal person, an "Acknowledgement of Country" can be undertaken by non-Aboriginal people. Its purpose is to publicly recognise the local Aboriginal people as the Traditional Owner and Custodians of the land on which you are meeting.
At Ochre Dawn, we always recommend that you learn how to recite the "Acknowledgement of Country" in your own words so that it sounds sincere, and given our passion for the preservation of languages, we also love hearing people speak in the local language. Now that shows respect!
For those in the Adelaide Plains region, or for frequent visitors to our great city, you would likely have heard that you reside and/or work on Kaurna Country.
The lifelong mission of proud Kaurna and Narungga man, Jack Buckskin, is to teach the endangered language of the Adelaide Plains to as many people as possible.
With his quick wit and humour, Jack will lead you in a live, in-person workshop of language learning and cultural understanding. And you will be sure have a whole lot of fun in the process.
Impress your colleagues in the boardroom, or the audience at your next event, when you deliver a culturally-respectful Acknowledgement of Country in Kaurna language.
* Light refreshments will be provided
