What is an Acknowledgment of Country?

An Acknowledgment of Country is a statement that shows you recognise and respect the land that has for thousands of years been cared for by the Aboriginal communities. It’s like saying ‘thank you for having me in your home’.

The best way to say thank you is to really mean what you say. So, how do you write one that shows you mean it?

What could an Acknowledgment of Country include?

The most meaningful Acknowledgment of Country statements are personal and specific to what you are doing and where you are. They mention the local Aboriginal words for places and Aboriginal groups and reflections about what you love about Country. Clair Andersen, Co-Chair of Reconciliation Tasmania, will share some resources and guide us through creating a personal and meaningful Acknowledgment of Country. A Yanuwa and Gunggalida woman, Clair has lived in Tasmania since she was a teenager. She has more than 30 years of experience in Aboriginal education, much of it at the University of Tasmania.

When could you say an Acknowledgment of Country?

Most people associate and Acknowledgment of Country with opening a formal meeting. But there are many other times when it could be a good way to show your respect for traditional owners.

An Acknowledgment to Country could be within your email signature, on your website, on signs at the entrances of businesses and homes or a statement at a family gathering or when you are out in nature

Kingborough Reconciliation Action Group (KRAG) is a local reconciliation action group. The group is part of Reconciliation Tasmania’s Local Action Network.

We bring together people interested in advancing reconciliation by nurturing knowledge, awareness, empathy, and respect for First Nations people.
