For over 100 years, insulin has been the only real answer for people living with type 1 diabetes. It keeps people alive. But it doesn't give them their life back. Professor Tom Kay is working to change that. As Director of St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research and Chair of the Australian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative, Tom has spent his career asking a harder question: what would it take to protect and restore the body's own ability to manage insulin, rather than just replace it?

In this talk, he'll share where that work stands today, including progress on stem-cell derived islets and disease-modifying therapies that could fundamentally shift how type 1 diabetes is treated. In his own words: "People with type 1 diabetes should have a life, not a life sentence."
