The planetary health inequity crisis: transforming the consumptogenic system
Health inequities arise because of a toxic combination of poor social policies, unfair economic arrangements and bad politics. These, in turn, affect the circumstances in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. All of which impacts on human health. Put climate change in the mix and we have the current planetary health inequity crisis.Â
Planetary health equity recognises the impact of climate change on social and health inequities. It also recognises the importance for health equity of considering planetary as well as human systems. This cycle is aggravated by the global consumptogenic system, which is characterised by institutions, policies, business practices, and social norms that encourage and reward excessive production and consumption of fossil fuel-reliant goods and services that are unhealthy and inequitably valued and distributed.Â
The consumptogenic system is a root cause of health inequities and climate change. A core question that is explored in this talk is how to transform the consumptogenic system towards planetary health equity outcomes. This takes us into the world of powerful interests, ideas and institutions that enable or hinder the development of intersectoral policy and business practices that advance planetary health equity goals.
