The ACT Government, as part of a five-year review, wants to hear what you think about the Senior Practitioner Act (SP Act): a law that makes rules for using restrictive practices.

Restrictive practices are actions that stop a person from doing what they want to do. Here are some examples of a restrictive practice:

holding a person’s body to stop them from moving or doing what they want
making a person be alone in a room or space
making a person take medicine so they are easier to control

JFA Purple Orange has been asked by the ACT Government to speak to those in the community who have experience or knowledge of restrictive practices being used by services covered by the SP Act.

The rules in the SP Act are for services that help the people in this list:

people with disability
children and teenagers at school or other places for learning
children and teenagers who can’t live with their family because it isn’t safe

In this session JFA Purple Orange wants to hear from people who work or have worked to provide these services. We want to know whether you think the law is working as it should, or if it can be improved.

You could work for a disability services provider, a school or childcare centre, or for out-of-home service providers.

JFA Purple Orange will listen to and take note of your experiences in this 2-hour online session, then communicate what we have heard from you and others to the ACT Government. The Government will then consider what changes, if any, need to be made to the law.
