Join us behind the scenes for our Lecture à la table. Reading at the table never fails to excite us. As we immerse ourselves in reading aloud for the first time, we delve into discussions about the story, the characters, and our emotional reactions. It is a moment that we want to share with you.

We are pleased to invite you to discover Marius, by Marcel Pagnol, the play that we have decided to stage in November. This evening, we will share the first stages of our work by reading the play to you and discussing the creative process. This will be an opportunity to talk about our inspirations, our artistic choices and any challenges that we may encounter. All your questions and comments will be welcome because we wish to create an enriching dialogue around this future production.

Reading of Marius, Marcel Pagnol.

Synopsis: The port of Marseille, in the twenties. Marius, the son of César, owner of the Marine bar, is torn between his love for Fanny, the little shellfish seller, and his desire to go to sea and travel the world.

When Marcel Pagnol, in 1929, had Marius performed on a Parisian stage, he probably did not suspect that his characters would become as famous as Harpagon or Monsieur Jourdain.

IMPORTANT: This event is in French ONLY. No translation is available. However, we know that sometimes listening can be difficult for French learners. To help you, we would be happy to provide you with a copy of the text so that you can read and listen simultaneously. However, we will only have the number of texts requested when purchasing tickets. For copyright reasons, you cannot keep the copy after the reading.

CÉSAR. - C'est ça ! Insulte la clientèle au lieu de te perfectionner dans ton métier ! Eh bien, pour la dixième fois, je vais te l'expliquer, le Picon-citron-curaçao. (Il s'installe derrière le comptoir.) Approche-toi !
Tu mets d'abord un tiers de curaçao. Fais attention : un tout petit tiers. Bon. Maintenant, un tiers de citron. Un peu plus gros. Bon. Ensuite, un BON tiers de Picon. Regarde la couleur. Regarde comme c'est joli. Et à la fin, un GRAND tiers d'eau. Voilà. 

MARIUS. - Et ça fait quatre tiers.

CÉSAR. - Exactement. J'espère que, cette fois, tu as compris. Il boit une gorgée du mélange.

MARIUS. — Dans un verre, il n'y a que trois tiers.

CÉSAR. — Mais, imbécile, ça dépend de la grosseur des tiers !

MARIUS. - Eh non, ça ne dépend pas. Même dans un arrosoir, on ne peut mettre que trois tiers.

CÉSAR (triomphal). — Alors, explique-moi comment j'en ai mis quatre dans ce verre. 

MARIUS. — Ça, c'est de l’arithmétique.

CÉSAR. - Oui, quand on ne sait plus quoi dire, on cherche à détourner la conversation... Et la dernière goutte, c'est de l'arithmétique aussi ?

MARIUS. — La dernière goutte de quoi ?

CÉSAR. — Toutes les dernières gouttes ! Il y en a toujours une qui reste pendue au goulot de la bouteille ! Et toi, tu n'as pas encore saisi le coup pour la capturer. Ce n'est pourtant pas sorcier ! (Il saisit une bouteille sur le comptoir, et tient le bouchon dans l'autre main. Il verse le liquide en faisant tourner la bouteille.) Tu verses en faisant un quart de tour, puis, avec le bouchon, tu remets la goutte dans le goulot. (Il fait comme il dit, avec un geste de mastroquet virtuose.) Tandis que toi, tu fais ça en amateur ; et naturellement, tu laisses couler la goutte sur l'étiquette... Et voilà pourquoi ces bouteilles sont plus faciles à prendre qu'à lâcher !

Il feint de faire un grand effort pour décoller sa main de l'étiquette. Marius éclate de rire.

No. However, for the comfort of French learners, we will have the text available. This will allow you to read and listen at the same time. And eventually, take note. Please send an email if you want a text.

• Is the event accessible to wheelchairs?

Yes, the space is wheelchair friendly and includes accessible toilets. 

• Where to park?

Free parking from 6 pm all around. 

• What time do the doors open?

Doors open at 6 pm. Reading starts at 6:15.

• From what age do you recommend this reading?

It always depends on the maturity of the young people. But let's say 14 years old. No vulgarity or sexual scenes.
