Event description

On Saturday 12th July from 16:00-18:30 at The Feminist Library we’ll be hosting our next Wahda event: Action for Sudan.

In April 2023 a war erupted in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which has resulted in Sudan becoming the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with over 11 million people being internally displaced within Sudan, as well as 3 million people seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. But how did we get here? Why is Sudan not getting the coverage it deserves? What can we learn from Sudanese resistance as fascism rises in the UK and what are the vested interests of other global powers, such as UAE and Egypt, in funding the ongoing violence?

To help answer these questions and guide the discussions we will be hearing from two speakers:

Dinan Alasad, a writer and mathematician from Khartoum interested in documenting and sharing the truth, particularly about Sudanese women and Jumana Eltgani, a human rights activist focused on gender justice and collective liberation in Sudan.

Wahda aims to foster a space of collective learning, where we can educate each other and strengthen our understanding of the interconnectedness of global anti-imperialist struggles.

All proceeds from this event will be going to Sunduq Al Sudan, a charity we have collaborated with before.

Inspired by alsunduq (“box”), mutual aid and community saving groups popular across Sudan, Sunduq Al Sudan collects and distributes funds to community-led on the ground initiatives. They are currently raising funds to support a children’s feeding program in Adré camp run by Hope and Haven Refugee Association operating within the Chadian branch of the NGO - Saving Alginina Initiative. SAI is a bi-national initiative that formed after the events of the war in June 2023 to help a large number of families who were forced to flee from their homes to the Chadian border region of Adré because of the outbreak of violence.
