The government’s strong focus on wellbeing has created a greater awareness of the fundamental role that wellbeing plays in enabling individuals and communities to thrive. As government priorities are being implemented, wellbeing measures and deliverables are increasingly become part of funding agreements with NGOs, community and social service, health, education and youth sectors.

Well individuals contribute to well whānau, schools and workplaces, communities, economies and society.

From Buzz Word To Intentional Action

The challenge is how do we move beyond wellbeing being just another 'buzz' word to a dynamic process that underpins the ability for individuals, whānau and communities to thrive and to be an instrument for systemic transformational change.

Collective Impact for Transformational Change: Ensure your wellbeing actions result in sustainable long term improvement in wellbeing and why many wellbeing initiatives don't.
Apply a population strength-based rather than an individual deficit lens.
Evaluations analysis has shown that many "wellbeing" initiatives are lacking in robust evidence-based theory and principles; are more remedial than transformational; focus too much on individual behaviour change rather than applying a population health lens; and fail to address structural and systemic factors that negatively impact on individual and collective wellbeing.These failures often results in programmes that have minimal impact, where the achievement of long term wellbeing outcomes is difficult to achieve and may in fact contribute to increased disparities in wellbeing equity.

Use ecosystem modelling and systems thinking
Using the latest research and evidence of efficacy, emphasis will be on participants being able to apply the theory to the practical application in their work context as well as being able to critique and assess the efficacy of different approaches to promoting mental wellbeing.

From outputs to Outcomes: Structure your wellbeing action using a proven wellbeing outcomes framework
By being informed by the social, cultural and environmental determinants of wellbeing, agencies such as local government, social services, schools, churches and workplaces that adopt a wellbeing outcomes framework, are able to identify how best to scope their wellbeing action and which strategies to implement to achieve long term and sustainable wellbeing outcomes.

Evaluations of numerous national and local wellbeing initiatives have consistently identified that the successful implementation of wellbeing initiatives requires leadership committed to the wellbeing principles and a skilled workforce that is knowledgeable of and competent in the application of wellbeing theory and principles. It is with these outcomes in mind that this Masterclass was designed.

This two day Masterclass incorporates the Our Wellbeing is Our Wealth: Putting wellbeing at the heart of what we do workshop on Day 1. Day two focuses on collective impact for transformational change theory, programme design, programme logic & outcome frameworks and audit tools.

Hear from an experienced wellbeing specialist who has lectured and implemented numerous wellbeing programmes at the local, national and international levels at the local, national and international levels. Drawing on thirty five years of working in mental wellbeing, the learnings from designing, implementing and evaluating mental wellbeing programmes including pitfalls and solutions to common problems that arise will be shared.

Masterclass Description

The clue to defining a wellbeing approach is found in the word itself, “wellbeing “. The exploration of “being” is the common theme throughout the workshop and against which the workshops’ content is applied. The concept of “being” is broken into two domains; the individual (whole of person) and the nature of social relationships and the context in which the being operates (whole of system).

Using five spheres of enquiry the workshop will frame the systematic dialogue among participants about defining and contextualising wellbeing. Those spheres are - Doing, Nature, Dynamics, Modality, Personhood.

This Masterclass provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and the practice of promoting mental wellbeing in communities and different settings, e.g. workplaces and schools. In Day 1, the workshop content and process will focus on the fundamentals of the theory, principles and evidence-based best practice in promoting mental wellbeing.

On Day 2, participants will have the opportunity to identify a set of wellbeing outcomes and apply them to a wellbeing programme logic. A proven model of collaborative partnerships using the principles of collective impact and transformational change which has been applied in numerous settings and populations will also be examined.

The Masterclass helps participants to:

understand the underlying theory, principles and best practice in promoting mental wellbeing,
critically assess appropriateness and applicability of mental wellbeing programmes or approaches for target audiences and settings
develop appropriate mental wellbeing outcomes for the target audiences
develop a programme logic to guide the planning, implementation and evaluation of the programme
understand how the Mental Wellbeing Impact Assessment Tool can assist them in orienting policies and programmes to a wellbeing approach.

An opportunity for two days of learning with internationally respected mental wellbeing practitioner and suicidologist, Barry Taylor

Barry has worked in mental wellbeing promotion and suicide prevention/postvention for 35 years at the local, national and international levels. His extensive experience includes sitting on state and national government advisory committees; designing, implementing and evaluating suicide prevention programs; writing suicide prevention guidelines, training packages and community resources; providing technical advice to community based and national mental wellbeing and suicide prevention programs.

He has led multiple ‘firsts’ in mental wellbeing both in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to mental wellbeing and suicide prevention, he was awarded in 2016 the NSW Mental Health Commissioner's Community Champion Award. He currently sits on the Health and Disability Ethics Committee.

Barry has lectured on wellbeing both nationally and internationally and been appointed to numerous government advisory committees on mental wellbeing and suicide prevention. He brings to this workshop extensive experience in advising communities and government on post-disaster recovery in terms of both mental wellbeing promotion / community resiliency and suicide prevention.

As a Health Sociologist and Public Health practitioner, Barry has a long-term interest in the social and cultural determinants of wellbeing, especially the role of gender and he brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for promoting wellbeing in men. He has examined the impact of discrimination, internalised stigma, social exclusion or inclusion on mental wellbeing along with the role of human rights as an enabler of wellbeing.

He embraces a holistic understanding of wellbeing and has an interest in the role spirituality and ecology contributes to a person's wellbeing. He uses a population health and systems change approach, drawing on transformational change theory and collective impact.

After a number of years overseas, Barry is living back in New Zealand and is passionate about building the knowledge base, competence and capability within our country to promote well whānau, workplaces and communities and for the incorporation of wellbeing principles in public policy and social outcomes such as education, training and employment.
