Course Content

Max Stafford-Clark created a rehearsal and text analysis technique for his company, Joint Stock Theatre, called Actioning. The success of his company led to all UK drama schools adopting this technique and now it is a firmly established part of early rehearsal processes within the British theatre scene more broadly.  The process involves the actor dividing dialogue into thoughts and finding a transitive verb to match the inner monologue and intentions. Far from being the 'lit crit' rehearsal process many British rehearsal rooms have been criticised for, actioning involves a connection between analysis and embodiment.

Actioning leads to specificity of thoughts and choices. The technique is born out of the Stanislavskian approach to acting but the process and application has been further developed by Max Stafford Clark and is now taught in most drama schools in the UK.

Actioning helps your imagination, it does not replace it.

Over 4 weeks we will go through several applications and exercises for actioning on selected scenes. You will be left with a thorough understanding of the technique and a process to use for any dramatic text!

This course is suitable for anyone interested in theatre and with varying levels of experience. It is possible to attend only one or two sessions if you wish and you can select those single tickets via the booking options.

LOCATION

The Mill Theatre is in Building 3.3, the Screencraft and KeepCo building which is a short walk from Capital Brewing. There are two easy ways to approach the Theatre:

PARK in P3 at the back of the precinct. From there you will see building 3.3 which has a large Screencraft sign. The public entrance is just up from that sign (not underneath it!). Once inside, walk about 5 metres and the theatre is to the right, next to Mojo Guitars.

WALK from Capital Brewing or the Less sculpture into the KeepCo building, pass Ramen Daddy and at the end of the corridor we are on the left.

PARKING

All parking in the precinct is free with several accessible parking spots in all the parking locations. The best spot to park is P3 at the back of the precinct. If you park elsewhere please be warned that signage and way-finding around the precinct is extremely difficult. Arrive in plenty of time to possibly get lost, possibly be in a bad mood!
