Description

At UTS, we are committed to fighting racism. Whether overt or subtle, done knowingly or unknowingly, racism and all forms of prejudice and discrimination are not welcome or accepted at UTS.

The culture we seek to build at UTS is one of safety and respect. If racism goes unchecked, we are creating the conditions where it can thrive.

Our collective responsibility is to call out racism when we encounter it and be proactively anti-racist.

The UTS Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion invites you to our ‘Actively anti-racist at UTS’ event – a half-day series of presentations and a workshop that addresses the impacts of racism and the steps we can take to combat it.

When:
Wednesday 26 October
Time: 11.45am – 1.45pm (followed by networking and nibbles)
Where: UTS City campus

What the event will involve:

1.   Watching three short films and one episode:
Let's talk about Race, Let's talk about Anti-racism and Episode 1 of Cooked (co-written and directed by Jake Duczynski, UTS alumni, Gamilaraay and Mandandanji artist and animator)
2.   An introduction to the ‘Say my name’ campaign
, delivered by the UTS Multicultural Women’s Network. This campaign started with the Mosaic Network at Sydney Uni as a decolonising approach to being proud of our names and heritages and learning how to pronounce 'foreign' and 'unfamiliar' names in an Anglo-Australian context.
3.   Video showcase
from students from the UTS School of Design focussed on cultural diversity and anti-racism
4.   Development of anti-racism resources
– Call it out and call to action: this activity aims to create a physical artefact (message boards) that can be embedded into subject modules and used as teaching and learning tools for lectures, tutorials, workshops and cultural diversity training purposes.

Participants will be asked to write down an experience of racism they have witnessed, experienced and/or perpetrated. This is a means to call out racism. Participants will also be asked to write down what they wished happened at that moment of racism, what they hoped bystanders would do (or what they did do) and what they hope for the future. This is a call to action – signalling how we can do better and how we can be supported and support each other

The data collected from these resources will also help strategic plans to shape cultural diversity initiatives at UTS.

Our ‘Actively anti-racist at UTS’ campaign stands in solidarity with those who have been racially and culturally minoritised. Many involved in this campaign identify as Indigenous and/or People of Colour, drawing on lived experiences, expertise and research to authentically drive this campaign.

We also acknowledge best practice initiatives across UTS: spotlighting what we are capable of doing, what we can support and what we can be involved in. Together, we can say 'no' to racism. Together, we can do better. Together, we must.
