DJ Hell – Between Club Culture and High Culture: The Producer as Conceptual Artist

Helmut Geier, internationally known as DJ Hell, has not only established himself as a style-defining figure in the electronic music scene, but over the past decades has become a key player at the intersection of subculture, pop, and high culture. His artistic practice transcends the conventional boundaries of DJing and music production - oscillating between advanced sound design, political engagement, and visual art. As early as the 1990s, DJ Hell laid the foundation for what would later be known as Electroclash with his label International Deejay Gigolo Records - a hybrid of 1980s new wave, punk attitude, techno, and post-ironic camp aesthetics. Hell was not merely a part of this movement, but its conceptual architect and name-giver. In this sense, his role can be compared to that of an artistic curator who brings together and transforms stylistic, visual, and intellectual currents His latest work, Meese x Hell – Gesamtklärwerk Deutschland’ (2025), created with performance artist Jonathan Meese, represents a radical synthesis of political sound art, post-Dadaist pathos, and techno political avant-garde. The title itself - a play on Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk - suggests a deliberately transgressive understanding of art as cultural intervention. The production, imagined as taking place in a metaphorical treatment plant’ of contemporary Germany, deals with themes such as national identity, language play, myth, and popular culture In the foreword to Uwe Schütte’s Kraftwerk study ‘Mensch–Maschine–Musik (2020), DJ Hell highlights Kraftwerk’s role as a conceptual blueprint for his own artistic trajectory: “Without Kraftwerk, there would be no DJ Hell. Their music was like a futuristic manifesto to me - minimalist, yet maximally effective.” This statement underlines the aesthetic continuity between Hell and the Düsseldorf school - a type of music that aims not only to be heard, but to be thought DJ Hell is thus not merely a producer, but an artistic and aesthetic thinker whose work possesses a semiotic depth that firmly positions him within the canon of contemporary cultural production - on equal footing with artists such as Meese, Kraftwerk, or even Beuys. His productions are not just tracks, but discourses in the medium of sound

  • Ruby (SYD)

    Ruby (SYD)

Since 1998, Ruby has been a cornerstone of Sydney’s underground electronic scene. Renowned for euphoric trance laced with soaring melodies and body-shaking beats, he descends powerfully into darker territory, mastering raw industrial techno and progressive house At his own GRIT rave, and appearing at ADAM Melbourne’s DELINQUENT in Naarm, Ruby’s late-night sets throb with seething textures and hypnotic pulses that grip the body in deep somatic euphoria Drawing from his lighting design background - where he earned his moniker - Ruby forges visceral immersive rituals where sound and striking lasers surge through flesh and bone, leaving crowds awestruck. A fixture in Australia’s queer underground, his events ignite sweat-drenched dancefloors from Sydney Mardi Gras to Tropical Fruits and Trance on the Harbour Two decades ago he released his first commercial CD, Ruby Trance Vol.1, and marked the milestone with a gig at the underground club Milkbar. Through the Ruby Trance label he champions uplifting, vocal trance rooted in LGBTQ+ pride. He also produces GRIT - his powerhouse Melbourne Northside fetish EDM rave: an unapologetically sex-positive, kink-heavy trance and techno sanctuary His motto, which inspired his logo - “Soar like an eagle on the wings of our music” - captures the raw physical ecstasy he unleashes and the indelible mark he’s left on the scene

  • Arson Fire (MEL)

    Arson Fire (MEL)

Arson Fire is a product of Melbourne's rave gutter - hard trance, harder techno in the bones, every subsequent mutation just proof that genre was never the point What matters is the low end: foundation-cracking, body-hijacking, unrepentant. After a Berlin baptism at ADAM for Folsom Europe last August, he's locked in - a fixture at the city's queerest, sweatiest edges, and returning to Berlin this year to headline at ADAM Berlin, 10 September 2026

  • Goat Spokesperson

    Goat Spokesperson

For over five years, Melbourne-based DJ Goat Spokesperson has built something genuinely his own - a sound that understands dancing not as entertainment but as necessity It started with a residency at a small Collingwood bar. From there he embedded himself in Melbourne's queer dance party scene with the kind of quiet inevitability that doesn't require fanfare. Supporting the Illustrious Blacks and then Jennifer Loveless at Sydney's beloved Sunday institution Pavlovabar confirmed what Naarm locals already knew His international debut - headlining ADAM, the notorious official opening party of Folsom Europe - and sibling to Melbourne's own ADAM - in 2022, landed like a statement. What comes next is the interesting part
