Tarni Tarnanthi joins the People's Blockade

In 2023, Tarni Tarnanthi - Rising Tide Adelaide - organised more than 50 people from Adelaide to join the People's Blockade in Mooloobinba / Newcastle.  We joined more than 3,000 others defending people and the planet from fossil fuel wreckers, over three days of action.

This year, Tarni Tarnanthi will be joining the People's Blockade again and we want to bring 200 of our closest friends from Kaurna Country and beyond!

In 2024, we aim to organise 200 people from Adelaide to swell the movement of 10,000 taking action in Mooloobinba / Newcastle.

To do this, we are taking bookings for the following:

25 seat bus

  • 25 seat bus for people to join the People's Blockade from the start of the event on 19 November, including a choice to join the Canberra Wave 26-28 November.

The 25 seat bus is scheduled to depart Adelaide on Sunday 17 November, with an overnight stay in Hay on Sunday, at the Big 4 Hay Plains, and to arrive in Newcastle on Monday 18 November.  The 25 seater will also travel to Canberra, for the Canberra Wave 26-28 November, then depart Canberra on 29 November, to return to Adelaide on 30 November.

57 seat coach

  • 57 seat coach for people to join the Protestival and Blockade 22 - 24 November.  As we get closer to the date, you may choose to join the Canberra Wave too and we'll aim to help you do so.

The coach is scheduled to depart Adelaide on Wednesday evening 20 November, to get people to the Blockade in time for the launch on Friday 22 November.  The coach will depart Newcastle on Sunday evening 24 November, to arrive in Adelaide on Monday 25 November.  The coach will not be stopping overnight.  *We have been unable to book a coach with toilet facilities on board. We will be stopping regularly.*

Use this guide for making your own way via public transport.

Public & regional transport

  • 20 block-booked tickets on public & regional transport (V-Line coach, XPT train & Syd-Newcastle Intercity) for people to get to Newcastle, leaving Adelaide on Monday 18 November.

Depart 8am Monday Adelaide Bus Station and arrive in Newcastle on Tuesday 19 November at approximately 10am. VLine coach Adelaide-Albury, transfer to XPT train Albury-Sydney, then transfer to the Intercity train Sydney-Newcastle. You will be travelling overnight, with no overnight stay.

  • 20 block-booked tickets on public & regional transport (V-Line coach, XPT train & Syd-Newcastle Intercity) for people to get to Newcastle, leaving Adelaide on Thursday 21 November.

Depart 8am Adelaide Bus Station and arrive in Newcastle on Friday 22 November at approximately 10am. VLine coach Adelaide-Albury, transfer to XPT train Albury-Sydney, then transfer to Intercity train Sydney-Newcastle.  You will be travelling overnight, with no overnight stay.

Please note: our group public transport bookings are 1-way only, because we can't guarantee the train will be on time for the bus connection in Albury on the way back, and because people might have different plans about what they want to do after the Blockade.  Information about options for return via public and regional transport is included in this guide. Please also note that travel on Intercity trains between Sydney and Newcastle cannot be booked in advance, and you will need to pay the fare (under $15 for an adult) at the time of travel with an Opal or credit/debit card.

Select the ticket that matches your plans.  If you are unsure, please email adelaide@risingtide.org.au with your contact details and questions, so we can respond.

We will be establishing a carpool support group at a later date.

About the Blockade

This November, join thousands of people for one of the most significant climate uprisings on the planet - stopping coal exports from the world’s  largest coal port at Muloobinba (Newcastle) on Awabakal and Worimi land and water for an unprecedented 50 hours!

Last year's Blockade was incredible; with a 3,000 people-powered peaceful flotilla, we stopped the coal ships for 32 hours.  And when 109 people chose to take further action and get arrested, they made global headlines demanding an end to new fossil fuels and transition funding for workers and communities.  With over 1,000 media hits, it was the largest civil disobedience for climate justice in Australia’s history.

Strap yourself in - this year it will be more than 3 times the scale: 10,000 people, over 10 days - don’t miss it!
