‘Adorning Country’ Paperbark Workshop with Kylie Colemane

Artist Kylie Colemane will be leading an 'Adorning Country' workshop where participants will make art using 'Gurrundurrung' aka Paperbark, which grows on Darug country and has strong linkages to the health of freshwater and saltwater.

In this workshop, participants will explore how Indigenous cultures beautify, symbolise, and connect with their environment and heritage. Kylie will also guide you in preparing and making a wearable paperbark pendant using additional materials like thread and beeswax.

All materials will be provided including paperbark foraged respectfully from Country, threads/cotton, recycled plastic needles, beeswax, & native honey. The following will also be provided: paintbrushes, necklace leather thonging to attach to pendants as well as a bee/honey allergy-friendly clear varnish for those who may need it.

ARTIST BIO:

Kylie Colemane is a proud Barramadagal woman of the Darug speaking nation, with Wiradjuri connections.

Based on the Mornington Peninsula on Bunurong land for over a decade she has worked with schools, universities, community groups & corporate groups facilitating various workshops.

As a cultural educator, artist & ecotherapist she invites the use of nature elements to improve physical and mental health creating wellness. Creatively bringing nature, art & mindfulness together with a First Nations lens. Focusing on observing, being with & enjoying nature elements.

Currently Kylie is an Indigenous Industry Fellow based at Monash Peninsula campus creating educational resources based around native plants, bushfoods and adding to her published, co-authored papers based on intergenerational learning. Kylie is one of the cohort chosen for the Koorie Heritage Trust Blak Design 2025. Consults on Urban projects around plants & design, has completed public art installations featuring botanical illustrations on Darug country, Sydney.
