Adur River Walking Safari - October

A Walking River Safari Conservation Tour

The Adur River around Shoreham is a very special and protected site - known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

This intertidal stretch of river and site of mud flats and salt marsh is a haven for many birds providing rich nutrition and also roosting (resting) places for birds. Regular inhabitants such as Oyster Catchers and Little Egrets are joined by migratory and over-wintering birds such as Redshank and Lapwings and many more. It is also a much loved place for humans to walk their dogs and for those seeking connection with nature, with its beautiful scenery and easy accessibility from Shoreham By Sea.

The river is a living system that supports multiple habitats and species but it is struggling with multiple challenges and threats. We will also share a little bit about the work of the Adur River Recovery Project that is happening to support the restoration of the river and how you can get involved with Friends of Adur SSSI to help.

This two hour safari will begin with a short introduction about the unique characteristics of this SSSI. Then we will take to the river and walk to 'Cuckoo Corner' the edge boundary of the remaining saltmarsh and the point where there Ladywell chalk stream meets the river. Along the journey we will share knowledge to help you understand, protect and enjoy this place and learn about its wildlife.

These safaris are aimed at:

• Members of the local public wishing to learn more about this special stretch of river.

• Nature lovers looking to contribute to our local river recovery

• We especially welcome teachers and group leaders who would like to incorporate the learning into their work.

Cost?

These trips are community events. Tickets are set at a pay what you can afford rate but we have a maximum suggested fee of £15 per ticket to support our mission to help restore the health of the river.

• The walk is approximately two hours (3.5miles round trip) on flat ground

• Participation is at own risk and personal insurance is recommended
