How the Northern Bruce Action Group (NBAG) uses evidence to advocate for a safer Bruce Highway.

The next Queensland Chapter seminar will be held in collaboration with the ACRS Rural Road Safety Network on Tuesday, 7 April at 12 pm and will be held online only.

Two members of NBAG will outline the comparative performance of sections of Queensland’s major regional road- the Bruce Highway. Fatality and serious injury (FSI) rates, road design and maintenance vary considerably along the 1671.3 km road, with FSI rates in some northern sections six times those south of Gympie. This data, along with results of NBAG’s 2024 survey of the entire highway were used to advocate with State and Federal Governments in the lead up to future elections. The presentation will include NBAG’s evidence base and advocacy methods.

Presenters:

Dr. Tracy Cheffins MBBS MPH FRACGP DrPH is a retired medical and public health practitioner. She has worked as a clinician, educator and primary care researcher in North Queensland and South Australia. She has been a regular user of the northern Bruce Highway for 50 years.

Adjunct Professor Colin Dwyer (JCU) is a retired consultant economist who has worked for decades to get North Queensland an equitable share of services and infrastructure. His media advocacy for a safer Bruce Highway began ten years ago. He first drove the Bruce Highway in 1983.
